Signs You Need a New Boiler

Several warning signs suggest your boiler is nearing the end of its life. These include your boiler being over 10–15 years old, frequent breakdowns happening more than once or twice a year, rising energy bills caused by declining efficiency (below 90%), and strange noises like banging, kettling, or gurgling.

Other red flags include uneven heating across different rooms, a yellow or orange boiler flame instead of a crisp blue one, difficulty finding replacement parts from the manufacturer, and water leaks from the boiler casing which indicate internal corrosion.

A repair is usually the right call when your boiler is less than 8 years old, the fault is a one-off issue like a faulty valve or sensor, the repair cost is under £500, the boiler is still under manufacturer warranty, and it otherwise runs efficiently and quietly.

A good rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the price of a new boiler, replacement is usually the better investment. You'll get a fresh warranty, significantly better energy efficiency, and complete peace of mind.
