What to Do If You Smell Gas
If you smell gas in your home, act fast. Here's exactly what to do and what NOT to do to keep your family safe.
What to Do Immediately
Do NOT switch any lights or electrical devices on or off. Do not use your mobile phone inside the property. Do not smoke or light any matches.
Open all doors and windows to ventilate the property. If you can safely access the gas meter, turn off the gas supply. Leave the property immediately and move to a safe distance.
Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. This free 24/7 line is available for all gas emergencies.
What NOT to Do
Never try to find the gas leak yourself. Don't turn any gas appliances on or off. Avoid using any electrical devices inside the property until it has been cleared by an engineer. Do not re-enter the property until a qualified engineer has given the all-clear.
After the Emergency
Once the National Gas Emergency Service has made the area safe, you may need a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect and repair your gas appliances before they can be used again. The emergency service makes things safe but doesn't carry out repairs.
Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Killer
Unlike natural gas, carbon monoxide is completely odourless — you cannot smell it. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
Every home with gas appliances should have a carbon monoxide detector fitted near the boiler and in bedrooms. If your CO alarm goes off, follow the same evacuation steps as a gas leak and call the emergency line immediately.
